Street Painting – Peinture à la rue

Curated by Judicaël Lavrador & Aude Launay

Just when graffiti, tags and street art are getting a foothold in art galleries and in the Grand Palais, contemporary painting istaking over the sidewalk again. The intent of this outside “exhibition” is actually to put canvases to the street test, along withperformed paintings, and various other painterly activities which we thought were doomed to the white cube. The fact is thatmany artists are now broaching paintings as amateurs: neither virtuoso nor avant-garde radicals, they check out dilettante painters and pictures in bric-à-brac stores, borrowing their clumsy lines which are at once anything but polished, and naïve. Without turning their backs on a radical praxis, other artists are going back to one of the sources of abstract painting—reality, in its most common-or-garden form. Both are thus in a way prising painting out of its ghetto and bringing it into the street.
